Taj Mahal Agra

The Supreme Court of India has taken various steps to preserve the Taj Mahal, recognizing its cultural and historical significance. These measures, among others, aim to ensure the long-term preservation of the Taj Mahal and its surroundings, safeguarding it for future generations.

  1. Restrictions on Industrial Activities: The Supreme Court has imposed restrictions on industrial activities and factories in the vicinity of the Taj Mahal to reduce air pollution, a major contributor to the discoloration of the monument.
  2. Emission Control Measures: It has directed the government to implement emission control measures for vehicles and industries in Agra, aiming to minimize air pollution that contributes to the yellowing of the Taj Mahal’s white marble.
  3. Regular Monitoring and Maintenance: The court has emphasized the need for regular monitoring and maintenance of the monument, including cleaning the surface to prevent discoloration due to pollution and environmental factors.
  4. Limiting Tourist Activities: At times, the court has suggested limiting the number of tourists or specific activities around the Taj Mahal to reduce the human impact on the structure and its surrounding environment.
  5. Protection of the Yamuna River: The court has also addressed issues related to the pollution of the Yamuna River, which flows near the Taj Mahal, as it directly impacts the monument’s foundation and surroundings.
